The Economy in Sierra Leone

Sierra Leone is rich in minerals and relies a lot on mining for its economy to succeed. The area specializes in diamond mining, and is among the top 10 diamond producing nations in the world! The picture above shows children mining for diamonds.

While Sierra Leone has succeed in certain areas, such as diamond mining, they still face many challenges. They have a high unemployment rate, especially in the area of their ex-combatants, like the people we're reading about in A Long Way Gone. The authorities are trying to help with programs to help the ex-combatants regain some form of civilian life, but reforms have been implemented very slowly.

Another interesting fact about Sierra Leone is that there currency is the Leone. A picture of the Leone is shown below. While we use our credit cards almost everyday, at least I know I do, credit card use is very limited in Sierra Leone. It it not used on a day to day basis and is really only used at some hotels and restaurants. The reason behind why it is even used at these places is because of the foreigners who come to Sierra Leone unaware of the economy, expecting to use some form of credit card. I actually think the Leone is really neat looking, and a lot prettier then than the money that we use (not that it's important for money to be pretty).

I got these facts from the following website: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sierra_Leonean_leone

  1. Diamonds cost a lot of money yet, and it is really sad to hear that the orginal country who sells the diamond is facing many challenges.

  2. diamond mining could lead this region into a whole new problem in the future.
